What Insurance Coverage is Required for Intermodal Trucking Under UIIA?

Navigating the intricacies of intermodal trucking insurance under the UIIA can be daunting without the right expertise. Understanding the necessary coverage is vital to ensure smooth operations and compliance with industry standards.

Essential Insurance Coverage Under UIIA Includes:

  • Auto Liability Insurance: This provides protection against liabilities arising from bodily injury or damage to property caused by vehicles operated by the trucking company.

  • Trailer Interchange Insurance: Covers damage to non-owned trailers that a trucker hauls, which is crucial when transporting goods across different modes of transport.

  • General Liability Insurance: Safeguards the business from various liabilities, including bodily injury or property damage claims not related to the vehicle's operation.

  • Cargo Insurance: Ensures protection for the freight being transported, covering possible losses or damages to the cargo itself.

Once these coverages are in place, the UIIA issues a certificate to confirm that the freight carrier is adequately insured. This certification is essential for accessing ports or rail yards. Operating without it can result in being denied entry, which can disrupt logistics and lead to financial setbacks.

Ensuring compliance with these requirements through experienced insurance agents minimizes costly errors and guarantees that your intermodal operations run smoothly.

The Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement

The UIIA, or Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement, was set into motion in 1973. It was the product of a collaborative effort by a joint task force that included representatives from several key organizations: the Association of American Railroads, the Equipment Interchange Association, and the Steamship Operators Intermodal Committee. The development of the UIIA was overseen by two major U.S. Government entities—the Department of Transportation and the Maritime Administration. Today, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) is responsible for overseeing the management of the UIIA.
